In early 2003 a new, severe form of pneumonia - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) - appeared around the world, primarily in Southeast Asia. The disease was highly contagious and spread rapidly through countries on four continents affecting 8098 people and causing 774 deaths. This outbreak was contained in June 2003.

New cases of SARS have been identified in Asia since the outbreak was contained in June of 2003. For the most current information about SARS in the world, see the World Health Organization (WHO) web site at www.who.int/en/.

The Washington State Department of Health continues to work with federal authorities to provide the latest and most accurate information to local health departments and healthcare providers in our state and to monitor Washington State for any potential cases.
