Confirmed Measles Case in Whatcom County (posted 9/10/08)

On September 6th, Whatcom County Health Department received a report from a health care provide of a suspect measles case in an adult resident born in 1958 who had not traveled out of the county during the likely exposure period.  The case spent several hours on August 12th at the Northwest Washington Fair http://www.northwestwashingtonfair.org/ and visited to two health care facilities during the likely exposure period.

Date of rash onset was September 2nd.  The illness has not been severe and this person seems to be making a timely recovery without complications.  On September 9th WA-PHL confirmed that this person’s rash illness was measles.

At this time there is no indication that any activities of this person while contagious for measles could have led to public exposure of large numbers of people.  Persons identified as having had contact with the case during the contagious period are being contacted individually by investigators at Whatcom County Health Department.

Suspect measles cases should be reported immediately to the local health jurisdiction.  The health jurisdictions can report suspect measles cases to Washington State Department of Health Communicable Disease Epidemiology Section at any time of day, seven days a week by calling 206-418-5500. Guidance for investigation of reported measles cases can be found at http://www.doh.wa.gov/Notify/guidelines/pdf/measles.pdf
